The Ride Spurs Era Of New Advancements

As the cancer landscape has changed over the past decade, so have the treatment options available to those facing the disease.

Support from the Ride to Conquer Cancer has had an immense impact on helping move the dial forward when it comes to breakthroughs in research and improving patient care across the province.

British Columbians have some of the best outcomes in the country, if not the world, because of these breakthroughs.

Innovation, precision treatment discoveries, early detection through enhanced screening and advancements to care have already changed the outcome for many people impacted by cancer.

Over the past ten years, BC Cancer achievements have made a significant impact – some highlights include:

  • 2009: for the first time in history, all three billion letters in the DNA sequence of a metastatic lobular breast cancer tumour are decoded
  • 2012: BC Cancer scientists decode the genetic make-up of triple negative breast cancer, opening the possibility to more effective treatments of the disease
  • 2017: BC Cancer scientists uncover seven new subtypes of ovarian cancer, which could result in new treatment strategies for some ovarian cancer patients including those that do not respond well to chemotherapy
  • 2018: results from an international clinical trial led by BC Cancer oncologist, Dr. Joseph Connors, reveal a promising new treatment combination for patients with advanced Hodgkin’s lymphoma

BC Cancer continues to innovate and conduct world-leading research and enhancements to patient care and funds raised from this year’s Ride will help support the next wave of treatment options and initiatives, providing new hope to families facing the disease.

Bringing together communities of cancer survivors, cyclists and supporters motivated to make a difference in the lives of people touched by cancer, The Ride to Conquer Cancer has raised more than $85 million in nine years, making it B.C.’s largest cancer fundraiser. The BC Cancer Foundation is the fundraising partner of BC Cancer and the largest funder of cancer research in the province. With the help of thousands of riders we are improving the lives of people facing cancer in BC and beyond.

The Ride to Conquer Cancer series is Canada’s largest peer-to-peer fundraising event.

You’re helping raise the standard of care across B.C.

For those facing cancer, swift access to the best diagnostic technology is potentially life-saving. The generosity of BC Cancer Foundation donors, including funds raised through the Ride to Conquer Cancer, recently supported the purchase of a state-of-the-art PET/CT scanner for BC Cancer – Victoria. As a result, wait times will be reduced and thousands of patients will be able to receive the critical scans close to home.

pet ctDr. Pete Tonseth, radiologist/nuclear medicine physician at BC Cancer, knows the importance of bringing this life-saving cancer diagnostic tool closer to thousands of families in need and how every dollar counts when it comes to fundraising for the cause.

“Supporting the BC Cancer Foundation allows individuals to directly impact the course of cancer research in B.C. and the cumulative effect of small donations cannot be overstated,” Dr. Tonseth says. “Annual events such as the Ride to Conquer Cancer are a fantastic opportunity for both individuals and groups to support the effort.”

PET scans play a vital role in a patient’s cancer care– from diagnosis and treatment planning to evaluating the effectiveness of treatment and determining if a patient’s cancer has spread or returned.

The BC Cancer Foundation is committed to bringing this critical care tool closer to home for thousands of patients – there is still a need for a PET/CT scanner in the Southern Interior and for an upgrade to the most advanced PET/CT technology at BC Cancer – Vancouver to better meet patient demand.

With one in two British Columbians being diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, the Ride to Conquer Cancer is vital to ensuring people across the province continue to have access to the latest in treatment and world-class care.

FUNDS FROM THE RIDE HAVE:

  • Supported more than 47 projects, investigating more than 50 different cancer types
  • Enabled more than 900 patients to be submitted to POG
First-of-its-kind, the Personalized Onco-Genomics Program allows world-leading scientists and doctors to map the genomic structure of enrolled patient’s cancer to help determine potential drug targets and treatment based on a biological rationale. Funds raised through The Ride are enabling BC Cancer to continue enrolling patients into this ground-breaking clinical study.
  • Supported the construction of the Conconi Immunotherapy Lab
Funds continue to support incredible progress for BC Cancer’s Immunotherapy research program, as well as the newly constructed Conconi Lab within the Deeley research Centre at the Vancouver Island Cancer Centre, in Victoria, establishing the provincial hub of immunotherapy treatment and development. Support will help make T cell therapy a reality for cancer patients in B.C., bringing a critical new treatment solution to the clinic.
  • Supported the development of Canadian-first “OncoPanel” with more than 2,000 BC cancer patients eligible annually
A new multi-gene analysis panel is now available to oncologists across B.C. as a provincial diagnostic tool, meaning a more personalized approach to treatment for thousands of eligible cancer patients. This is the first gene panel to be available province-wide and as part of standard cancer care in Canada for acquired cancers.
  • Enhanced brain cancer care
Brain cancer care in B.C. has been transformed, enabling patients to be seen by neuro-oncology specialists quickly and effectively, in one visit and at one site.
  • Supported a new drug for advanced prostate cancer to enter clinical trials
Funds will further support a new prostate cancer drug developed at BC Cancer called EPI-506 that is currently in clinical trial. This new treatment option offers hope for the thousands impacted by prostate cancer in B.C. and around the world.
  • Purchased a second state-of-the-art PET/CT scanner & reduced wait times
Funds raised through The Ride supported the purchase of BC Cancer’s second PET/CT scanner and allowed for an upgrade to an existing scanner. As a result, wait times have been reduced and the number of patients able to receive these life-saving scans have doubled.

WE BELIEVE THAT TOGETHER, BC CAN BREAK DOWN CANCER

The BC Cancer Foundation is the fundraising partner of BC Cancer. Every dollar we raise stays right here at BC Cancer to advance research and enhance care for the people of B.C.

At the BC Cancer Foundation we believe that with your help BC CAN make a difference in the lives of all British Columbians. We know that one in two people in our province will face cancer in their lifetime and we’re igniting progress to break down cancer, piece by piece, in the labs and clinics.

BC CAN improve treatments for patients. BC CAN harness genomics to save lives. BC CAN prevent cancer for the next generation.

By working with people like you, who believe that investments in science and enhancements to care can make a significant difference for British Columbians, we are confident that BC CAN change the outcome for each person facing this disease.

The progress is real.

With incredible leaps in science and technology and the generous support of donors, BC Cancer is breaking new ground in genomics, immunology and nuclear medicine. This will lead to prevention in high risk families, better treatments with fewer side effects and ultimately improved health and longevity for people impacted by cancer.

We are actively working with our 100,000 donors and communities across B.C. to inspire investment in BC Cancer and our provincial teams of world-leading researchers, oncologists and care providers.

Together, BC CAN break down cancer.
