THE ENBRIDGE® RIDE TO CONQUER CANCER® ANNOUNCES $19.2 MILLION RAISED IN 12th ANNUAL EVENT

Canada’s largest cycling fundraiser draws 4,573 Riders in Ontario’s annual event, cycling over 200 kilometres in two days and supporting personalized cancer medicine at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto.

TORONTO, JUNE 8, 2019 – The Enbridge® Ride to Conquer Cancer® announces $19.2 million raised for Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world. The 12th annual Ride kicked off with simultaneous opening ceremonies in Toronto and Niagara Falls — the starting points for The Ride — where participants and supporters gathered to honour all those touched by the disease.

A riderless bike was escorted through the crowd during Opening Ceremonies to commemorate the late Dr. Hans Messner, a pioneer of allogenic bone marrow and stem cell transplantation in Canada and participant of The Ride since its inception in 2008.

4,573 Riders began the two-day, 200+ kilometre journey, which will culminate in Niagara Falls on Sunday afternoon with family and friends gathered to cheer them across the finish line.

In 12 years, The Ontario Ride has raised over $213.2 million to further enhance personalized cancer medicine at The Princess Margaret, and to fund vital cancer research, treatment advances, education, and new standards of care here and around the world. Nationally, the Ride to Conquer Cancer has raised over $436.2 million to-date and is Canada’s largest peer-to-peer fundraising event.

“All of our Riders, volunteers, Crew members, partners and donors are working together toward one common goal: To conquer cancer in our lifetime,” said Michael Burns, President and CEO, Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. “It is remarkable to see the annual fundraising success of The Ride, and its success continues to grow year after year. To everyone who supports The Ride, thank you for your courage and hard work, it is truly inspiring. Together, we will reach the finish line.”

The annual Ride in Ontario draws thousands of participants from around the world and brings together communities of cancer survivors, cyclists and supporters who train and fundraise year-round to participate in the annual event.

“We all have a story,” says Samantha Zacchigna, first-year Rider on Team EZ Ride. “Mine started when my dad, Ezio, had a small mark on his neck in 2014. By October 2018, he passed away after fighting long and hard with Metastatic Melanoma. I’m riding for the first year because my dad’s story is living proof that more research is necessary to conquer cancer. I feel compelled to keep my dad’s spirit and zest for life alive. I refuse to let him become another statistic.”

Since 2011, Enbridge has been the title sponsor of the Ride to Conquer Cancer. Collectively, more than 2,500 Enbridge employees, their friends and families have raised over $9.5 million for The Ride across Canada.

“Enbridge is incredibly proud to be the title sponsor of this outstanding event,” said Mike Shannon, Vice President, Storage and Transmission Operations and Integration Management Office, Enbridge Gas. “Our Riders and volunteers have collectively raised more than $9.4 million and we look forward to this impactful weekend every year. It’s inspiring to see so many people connect through this cause, and we are honoured to support the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in conquering cancer in our lifetime.”

Organizers released the date of June 13 – 14 for the 2020 event, and encourage people of all athletic abilities to participate in the 13th annual Enbridge® Ride to Conquer Cancer®. For more details visit www.conquercancer.ca or call [877] 699-BIKE [2453].
