THE ENBRIDGE® RIDE TO CONQUER CANCER® ANNOUNCES $18.3 MILLION RAISED IN 11th ANNUAL EVENT
Canada’s largest cycling fundraiser draws 4,555 riders in Ontario’s annual event, cycling over 200 kilometres in two days and supporting Personalized Cancer Medicine at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto
TORONTO, June 9, 2018 – The Enbridge® Ride to Conquer Cancer® announces $18.3 million raised for Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, as the 11th annual Ride commenced in Ontario on Saturday morning. Opening ceremonies took place in Toronto and Niagara Falls, where participants and supporters gathered to honour all those touched by the disease. The crowd heard from Princess Margaret leaders and participants who shared their personal stories. A riderless bike was escorted through the crowd, representing those whose lives ended too soon because of cancer. 4,555 riders began the two-day 200+ kilometre journey, finishing in Niagara Falls on Sunday afternoon, where family and friends will cheer them across the finish line.
In 11 years, the Ontario Ride has raised over $194 million to further enhance personalized cancer medicine at The Princess Margaret, and fund vital cancer research, treatment advances, education and new standards of care here and around the world. Nationally, The Ride to Conquer Cancer has raised over $396 million to-date and is Canada’s largest peer-to-peer fundraising event.
“Every day, 565 Canadians are diagnosed with cancer and it is estimated that 1 in 2 Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetimes. The annual success that comes from The Ride, continues to fund Personalized Cancer Medicine, which treats the patient and not just the disease. Dollars from The Ride, support the team at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre to detect, diagnose, target, support and treat over 17,700 new patients every year,” says Michael Burns, President and CEO of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.
“With this being my first year riding, I am truly amazed by the community of participants and supporters who dedicate their year to this incredible event. A sincere thank-you to all participants, volunteers, crews, partners and donors for continuing to believe in The Princess Margaret and your contribution to this year’s success,” said Burns.
The annual Ride in Ontario draws thousands of participants from around the world and brings together communities of cancer survivors, cyclists and supporters who train and fundraise year-round to participate in the annual event, between Toronto and Niagara Falls.
On Saturday night, the CN Tower and Toronto sign in Nathan Phillips Square will be lit blue, yellow and white in support of The Ride and the $18.3 million raised.
“I was diagnosed with melanoma on June 9, the exact date of The Ride this year and every June, I do something special that pushes my physical limits,” said Abby Micks, first year rider from Toronto.
“I have been on a six-year long cancer journey and I have beaten all my statistics. That is why I am so dedicated to cycling in this event. Despite my personal battle, I am also riding for family members who have been affected by the disease. In the last few weeks, my closest cousin, who was like a brother, lost his battle. His last words to me were, ‘have a good ride Abby!’ To honour him, my fiancée and I have formed team La Vie to celebrate life. Life is an unpredictable journey but worth every curve ball we are handed!” Micks added.
Since 2011, Enbridge has been the title sponsor of the Ride to Conquer Cancer. Collectively over 2,500 Enbridge employees, their friends and their families have raised over $8.6 million for the Ride across Canada.
“Enbridge is incredibly proud to be the title sponsor of this outstanding event, and our riders and volunteers look forward to this weekend every year,” said Dave Charleson, Vice President, Energy Supply and Customer Care, Enbridge Gas Distribution.
“We’re also pleased to announce that we have renewed our sponsorship of The Ride, and 2019 will mark 12 years as title sponsor. The Ride continues to raise crucial dollars to save lives of those touched by cancer, which far too many of our loved ones face. Together, we are making a difference for patients and are grateful to the community of Riders and supporters who are devoted to The Ride and its continued success. We are honoured to support The Princess Margaret in helping to conquer cancer,” added Charleson.
