IMPACT & USE OF FUNDS

Since 2009, the Enbridge® Ride to Conquer Cancer® has raised over $56 million and is currently Quebec’s largest cycling fundraiser. The Ride to Conquer Cancer series is Canada’s largest peer-to-peer fundraising event.

Funds raised through the Enbridge® Ride to Conquer Cancer® support vital cancer research, treatment, care and prevention programs at the Jewish General Hospital’s Segal Cancer Centre and other healthcare partners across Quebec.

The Jewish General Hospital’s Segal Cancer Centre is a leader in Quebec for implementing a focused and comprehensive approach to fighting cancer through medical treatment, patient care, family support and research, housing scientists and clinicians under one roof.

The Jewish General Hospital’s world-leading team of healthcare professionals are working to develop new technologies and protocols in molecular diagnostics, functional imaging, biomarkers, molecular target discovery and validation, and advanced targeted radiation therapy.

Funds raised through The Ride are put to immediate use in order to attract and retain recognized doctors, scientists and researchers and implement transformational cancer research, treatment and care. Innovations at the Segal Cancer Centre include:

  • First High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) machine in North America:
    This advanced type of targeted therapy can effectively destroy specific areas of cancer within the prostate, while preserving normal prostate tissue and function. The HIFU machine enabled the Division of Urology to become the first in Canada to treat prostate cancer with focal therapy.

  • Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT):
    Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) treats early stage breast cancers and has the potential to replace 20-30 radiotherapy sessions with one single IORT session.
  • Creation of first Molecular Pathology Centre in Quebec:
    This centre provides patients with a complete DNA profile, identifying genetic mutations. In order to study new biomarkers, this centre requires sophisticated equipment like a Triple Quadrupole Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry system, Focused Ultrasonicator, Nitrogen Gas Generator, inverted tissue culture microscope and slide scanner.
  • First and only clinical centre for the pan-Canadian program of proteomics:
    In the fight against cancer, personalized medicine has become a powerful tool. With the creation of not only a Clinical Proteomics Laboratory at the Segal Cancer Centre but also the first pan-Canadian proteomics program, the JGH is continually advancing the impact that proteomics and personalized medicine can have for cancer patients locally and around the world.

  • Nanorobotics (world innovation):
    A paradigm-shifting project with Polytechnique that offers the next generation of cancer patients nanorobotic guided treatment, delivering drugs targeted to tumors in conjunction with state-of-the-art radiation.

  • The Centre of Clinical Research and Evaluative Oncology (CCREO) –More than 50 oncologists, researchers and associates work closely with a team of researchers from the UHCG Cancer Research Department to develop and enhance research programs in the fields of oncology, X-ray and genomics at the CHU de Quebec.

  • The Morpheus Study & Improvement of Treatment Through X-Ray
    Dr. Vuong started the Morpheus Study because of the donation of the Endoscopy equipment, where she monitored patients with rectal cancer using the equipment rather than having them undergo surgery. In the last five years, her team also received a mobile X-Ray unit from donors, allowing patients with early breast cancer to receive intra operative radiation as a single treatment immediately post-surgery.

DETECT

Detecting cancers early leads to better outcomes. The Princess Margaret is working to develop new Molecular Imaging Technology that can see tiny cancers. They are also making advances with Biomarkers, indicators of cancer that can be detected through blood and serum tests.

DIAGNOSE

The Princess Margaret is underway testing new equipment and procedures which help determine the specific genetic mutation of a patient. This information enables their doctors and researchers to recommend the optimal combination of drug and other therapies to treat the patient.

TARGET

Researchers, scientists and doctors at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre are developing ways to make surgery, radiation and drug treatments more targeted to the cells with cancer.  This approach will leave healthy tissue intact, minimizing toxic side effects and new treatments such as Immune Therapy will help lead to better survival rates.

SUPPORT

Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is working to provide programs and strategies to help patients living with cancer and their families to cope with the emotional and physical effects of cancer treatment. The award-winning survivorship, patient education and psychosocial support programs help reduce stress and improve the overall patient experience.
