THE ENBRIDGE® RIDE TO CONQUER ANNOUNCES $1.9M RAISED AND COUNTING AT VIRTUAL RIDE IN SUPPORT OF THE ALBERTA CANCER FOUNDATION

Alberta’s largest cycling fundraiser shifts its 12th annual Ride to a virtual event and still draws in 902 virtual Riders, supporting breakthrough cancer research and care at the 17 cancer centres across Alberta

ALBERTA, August 29, 2020 – The 12th annual Enbridge® Ride to Conquer Cancer® went virtual this year due to COVID-19. It was announced on Saturday that although participants were not able to ride the two-day, 200-kilometre journey throughout southern Alberta, 902 Riders helped raise $1.9M for the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Fundraising for the event will continue through the weekend and until October 31, 2020.

For the last 12 years, the Alberta Ride has supported local cancer research, clinical trials, enhanced care and the discovery of new cancer therapies at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, Cross Cancer Institute and 15 other centres across Alberta. Cancer doesn’t stop for a pandemic and every day, 53 Albertans continue to hear the words, “you have cancer.” This year’s unique, virtual event gave participants the opportunity to safely ride anywhere across the province, any distance and raising any funds they could.

The Alberta Ride is the province’s largest cycling fundraiser and Canada’s largest peer-to-peer fundraising event. Funds raised from this year’s event will continue to be put towards groundbreaking research and enhanced patient care programs that make life better for patients across the province.

“Three months ago, we didn’t think this event would happen. Seeing our community come together and continue to make a difference for Albertans facing cancer is, quite frankly, nothing short of extraordinary,” said Wendy Beauchesne, CEO of the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

“We are so grateful for this inspirational community of Riders, donors and partners like Enbridge who are dedicated to providing real-life returns to patients across the province. Dollars raised will continue to support the 17 cancer centres across the province and provide Albertans with access to world-class treatment and care.”

Since 2011, Enbridge has been the title sponsor of the Ride to Conquer Cancer. Collectively, over 2700 Enbridge employees, their friends and their families have raised over $9.75 million for the Ride across Canada.

“Cancer doesn’t stop, and neither will we. We will continue to Ride and raise funds in our fight against cancer,” said Vern Yu, Executive Vice President and President, Liquids Pipelines. “We’re proud to be the title sponsor of the Ride to Conquer Cancer and we’re looking forward to our continued partnership and our Ride in 2021.”

Without the dedication of Riders like David Cormack, the success of the first-ever virtual Ride would not have been possible. When it was announced that the in-person Ride would be postponed, David still wanted to support cancer patients and their families. On July 1, he embarked on a 24-day journey from Brooks, AB to Kingston, ON and rode 3,600 km across Canada to raise vital funds for the Alberta Cancer Foundation. “I was pretty invested in the Ride and I didn’t want to stop now. I had multiple aunts and uncles who had cancer, and I still wanted to give back to all the health-care workers and the research that goes into helping cancer patients,” says David. “Every dollar you donate means a dollar more to one day conquering cancer.”

THE ENBRIDGE® RIDE TO CONQUER CANCER® ANNOUNCES $18.3 MILLION RAISED IN 12th ANNUAL EVENT

Canada’s largest cycling fundraiser draws XX Riders in Ontario’s annual event, cycling over 200 kilometres in two days and supporting personalized cancer medicine at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Alberta.

ALBERTA, June 8, 2019 – The Enbridge® Ride to Conquer Cancer® announces $XX million raised for Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, on the top 5 cancer research centres in the world. The 12th annual Ride kickced off with simultenous opening ceremonies in Alberta and Niagara Falls — the starting points for the Ride — where participants and supporters gathered to honour all those touched by the disease.

A riderless bike was escorted through the crowd during Opening Ceremonies to commemorate the late Dr. Hans Messner, a pioneer of allogenic bone marrow and stem cell transplantation in Canada and participant of The Ride since its inception in 2008.

XX riders began the two-day 200+ kilometre journey, which will culminate in Niagara Falls on Sunday afternoon with family and friends gathered to cheer them across the finish line.

In 12 years, the Ontario Ride has raised over $XX to further enhance personalized cancer medicine at The Princess Margaret, and to fund vital cancer research, treatment advances, education and new standards of care here and around the world. Nationally, the Ride to Conquer Cancer has raised over $XX million to-date and is Canada’s largest peer-to-peer fundraising event.

“All of our riders, volunteers, crew members, partners and donors are working together toward one common goal: To conquer cancer in our lifetime,” said Michael Burns, President and CEO, Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. “It is remarkable to see the annual fundraising success of The Ride, and its success continues to grow year after year. To everyone who supports The Ride, thank you for your courage and hard work, it is truly inspiring. Together, we will reach the finish line.”

The annual Ride in Ontario draws thousands of participants from around the world and brings together communities of cancer survivors, cyclists and supporters who train and fundraise year-round to participate in the annual event.

“We all have a story,” says Samantha Zacchigna, first-year Rider on Team EZ Ride. “Mine started when my dad, Ezio, had a small mark on his neck in 2014. By October 2018, he passed away after fighting long and hard with Metastatic Melanoma. I’m riding for the first year because my dad’s story is living proof that more research is necessary to conquer cancer. I feel compelled to keep my dad’s spirit and zest for life alive. I refuse to let him become another statistic.”

Since 2011, Enbridge has been the title sponsor of the Ride to Conquer Cancer. Collectively, more than 2,500 Enbridge employees, their friends and families have raised over $9.5 million for The Ride across Canada.

“Enbridge is incredibly proud to be the title sponsor of this outstanding event,” said Mike Shannon, Vice President, Storage & Transmission Operations & Integration Management Office, Enbridge Gas. “Our riders and volunteers have collectively raised more than $9.4 million and we look forward to this impactful weekend every year. It’s inspiring to see so many people connect through this cause, and we are honoured to support the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in conquering cancer in our lifetime.”

Organizers released the dates of June 13 – 14 for the 2020 event, and encourage people of all athletic abilities to participate in the 12th annual Enbridge® Ride to Conquer Cancer®. For more details visit www.conquercancer.ca or call 877-699-BIKE.
