What To Pack

With the Ride coming on fast, our partner Sugoi would like to offer some tips on what to pack in preparation for Event weekend.

  1. Your helmet and two pairs of bike shorts – one for each day of The Ride – with a good chamois which will make your ride much more comfortable.
  2. Packable jacket: the weather can change instantly so it is important to have a lightweight, packable jacket that protects you from the elements, but offers breathability.
  3. Loud & proud jersey: show your personality or if you are riding with a team, your team¹s spirit, with a jersey that you are proud to wear.
  4. Well-fitted gloves: again, you may want a pair of gloves for each day. Gloves should fit you a little on the tighter side as they will stretch when worn. For long distance riding, invest in a glove with solid padding to save your palms.
  5. Accessories: the smallest accessories can make a big difference. From helmet covers toprotective arm sleeves or compression calf sleeves‹make sure you have some extra coverage come rain or shine.
  6. Socks & compression socks: once you take your shoes off on day one, do yourself a favour and put on some compression socks to help with overnight leg recovery. You will also want another pair of cycling socks for day two.
  7. Change of shoes: this is one that many people forget. You will want to take your cycling shoes off and let your feet get some air so make sure you pack some flip flops or light weight shoes.
  8. Sunglasses: even on an overcast day, sunglasses will help you see better and concentrate on your ride.
  9. Camera: Of course, you want to capture all the amazing moments ¬ this one is an essential!
  10. On Board Fueling: Riding this distance takes major calories! Be sure you don’t dip into the red zone by having energy bars and gels stored in your jersey pocket.

For more information on what to pack, download this handy check-list.

what-to-pack

Always start with safety

  • Remember: this is a Ride, not a Race!
  • Wear a helmet and carry a patch kit, tire levers, spare tube, and pump at all times.
  • Know and obey all traffic signals, signs, markings, laws, and regulations.
  • Always use hand signals to indicate that you are going to make a right or left turn or are about to stop; motorists and cyclists need to know what you intend to do. If your hands aren’t free as you slow or stop, call out “SLOWING” or “STOPPING”. When stopping, pull to the right edge of the road. Move completely off the road to rest or make repairs.
  • Call out, “ON YOUR LEFT!” when passing at all times. Also, don’t stop or slow down without letting other cyclists and drivers know your intentions in advance. Call out, “STOPPING!” or “SLOWING!”
  • Always ride predictably and in control. Ride in a straight line, and consciously try to avoid excessive weaving back and forth. In most vehicle-bicycle accidents, motorists say they never saw the bicyclists, or didn’t see them in time to avoid the collision.
  • Cycle with traffic, never against it. When moving from one lane to another, always give way to traffic.
  • Keep to the right of the road at all times and leave other Riders plenty of room to pass on your left. The exception to this rule occurs when preparing for a left turn or avoiding unsafe road conditions (potholes, construction, etc.).
  • Always stop at stop signs and look right, left, then right again before entering the road.
  • Always make left turns from the appropriate left-turn lane.
  • Ride single file when cycling with a group. Do not ride side by side.
  • Always be on the lookout for a person in the driver’s seat of any parked car you may pass. Parked drivers are notorious for swinging their doors open suddenly or pulling out into traffic without checking for bicyclists.

Drafting behind other cyclists can be dangerous and leaves very little room for error. These techniques should never be used in high traffic areas or on roads with frequent intersections.

We encourage experienced Riders to join our Rider Safety Team click below for more information.
